No BBQs or Fires please

Enjoy the meadows but please NO BBQs

During this extended period of hot dry weather coupled with the Summer holidays people might be tempted to take a disposable BBQ into Rye Meadows or Ashtead Common. Please do NOT.

With the grass so dry even a discarded match can start a fire that could quickly get out of control threatening wildlife and the adjoining properties.

Bring a picnic and a cold drink but PLEASE no BBQs or fires.

Thank you,

"Ashtead Dry Meadows"

Our Chairman, Nigel Bond, commented on the last volunteering session that we should perhaps rename the area from Ashtead Rye Meadows to Ashtead Dry Meadows. The pond which in the early Spring had seen frog spawn in the deepest part, is now a desert like  area with deep cracks in the clay pond base.

The surrounding grassland is tinder dry and vulnerable to an accidental fire. The area has seating for looking over the pond area and surrounding woodland and is ideal for a picnic, but please NO disposable BBQs.
